How to Identify Nine Types of Grass According to Climate and Texture

types of lawn grass

Specialized Property Care's staff are leading lawn mowing experts in Sioux Falls with a robust knowledge of different types of lawn grass. No matter which classification of grass grows on a property, the service technicians establish the proper care grass needs to thrive. Specialized Property Care treats each type of lawn grass with attention to its ideal climate and unique texture.

Here are nine different grass types and how to identify them.

1. Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky bluegrass thrives in cooler conditions, however, it can also survive in the country's climate transitional zone. It features a soft texture and dark green shading. This type does not have a good shade tolerance and requires some sun.

2. Tall Fescue

Dark green shades of tall fescue grass can grow in clumps, taking on the appearance of a patch of grassy weeds. Its blades feel stiff and coarse and grow in both Northern and Southern regions.

3. Fine Fescue

Fine fescue grass features soft, thin, needle-lick blades that appear gray-green in color. Yards with fine fescue require more irrigation to satisfy the grass's above-average need for water. A low heat tolerance makes this a popular grass throughout North East and North Central parts of the country.

4. Bentgrass

Bentgrass is one of the types of lawn grass best suited for golf courses. This cool-season grass is mostly throughout the Northern U.S. and has a narrow, flat blade. It requires frequent watering and can tolerate trimmings down to a tenth of an inch.

5. Ryegrass

A lawn staple in Northern regions, ryegrass has a dark green shading that leaves a white tip appearance after mowing. It maintains a soft texture with average water consumption.

6. Bermuda Grass

Another golf course favorite, Bermuda grass, features sharp blades and a deep green color. However, the warm, humid conditions needed to grow Bermuda Grass can attract pests to the yard's soil. Fortunately, Specialized Property Care offers pest control this March to combat colonies.

7. Zoysia

Zoysia features a distinct prickly texture. Zoysia has good drought resistance as it can do well in full sun and survive without daily watering. However, its medium green shading can turn brown in cold conditions.

8. Centipede

Centipede grass requires little lawn maintenance. Its distinct features include mat-like blades that grow almost parallel to the ground to create dense turf.

9. Floratam

Floratam thrives in warm weather and features a dark green shade with broad blades.
